A boxy top, a fluid long-sleeve layer and a textured pullover can give an autumn/winter collection three distinct material expressions. For brands developing AW27/28 collections, each offers a different way to bring interest to familiar everyday garments.

Two seasonal references inform this selection. Première Vision's September 2026 material story for AW27/28 explores compact interlocks, expressive pile surfaces and patinated finishes. Woolmark's June 2026 presentation for AW27 brings together fine-gauge constructions, sculptural volume and fluid layers.

Regen-tech Fashion's reading focuses on how these ideas could translate into circular knit fabrics for contemporary daywear and premium basics: a more defined silhouette, a layer with a visible role, and a surface that gives a simple shape its character. The existing brand garments below serve as application references for these development directions.

Compact Knits for a Defined Silhouette

Première Vision's sculptural direction pairs compact interlocks with smooth, lustrous surfaces and generous volume. For everyday circular-knit collections, we see a useful interpretation in separates with a deliberate outline: a boxy top with a defined hem, a softly rounded sleeve or a skirt that holds its shape around the body.

The design brief becomes more interesting when shape and drape are considered separately. A top may need enough body to stand away from the waist, while a trouser needs a clean line as it falls from the hip. Both can be described as structured, yet they ask different things of the fabric.

Theory's women's pant guide illustrates this range. Its Track Pant in Double-Knit Jersey has a wide-leg cut and front pintuck detailing; its Wide-Leg Pant in Double-Knit Jersey is described through a fluid silhouette. The examples show how the same broad fabric category can support different approaches to everyday dressing.

For Regentech, this direction connects with the double knits in our Scuba collection, including cotton- and viscose-blend options. These offer a starting point for exploring body and fall. Where a fuller silhouette is the aim, a spacer construction can also enter the selection, with its bulk and drape assessed in the proposed shape.

When comparing compact interlocks with fuller spacer constructions, consider the balance of body and drape; weight alone cannot describe the resulting silhouette.

Fluid Layers with a Visible Role

Woolmark's Embodiment theme includes next-to-skin layers and fluid garments. Our interpretation for circular knits is a layer that contributes to the outfit while remaining comfortable beneath another piece: a fine mock-neck under a jacket, or a relaxed long-sleeve top with a neckline and folds that remain visible.

EILEEN FISHER's Fine Jersey V-Neck Top provides an existing example. Made from 95% TENCEL™ Lyocell and 5% elastane, it combines a slim fit with long sleeves, a V-neck and a center-front seam. Those details give a simple jersey garment definition when worn on its own.

For AW27/28 development, this suggests two related briefs. A close-fitting layer needs to sit comfortably beneath tailoring, with limited bulk through the sleeve and neckline. A looser top can give more space to drape, allowing the fabric's folds and hem to shape its appearance.

Regentech's TENCEL™ Lyocell/Wool collection offers jersey and rib constructions to explore within these briefs. A smooth jersey can keep attention on the cut and folds; a visible rib can become part of the garment's design. The choice should follow the intended balance of fit, surface and movement.

For a top intended to be worn on its own, softness and drape need to be considered alongside coverage, particularly where the fabric stretches across the body.

Surface Character for Familiar Shapes

Première Vision's AW27/28 material story gives prominence to velvet, fluid terry, patinas and wash effects. Our interest for everyday circular knits is in translating that attention to surface into restrained garments: a plain long-sleeve top, a simple pullover or a coordinated set whose fabric provides the detail.

ATM Anthony Thomas Melillo's Slub Jersey Long Sleeve V-Neck Tee is a useful application reference. Its 100% cotton jersey, relaxed shape and hand-distressed details give a familiar garment a visibly uneven, worn character.

Several material routes can be explored, with different results. Variations in slub yarn thickness contribute to an irregular surface. A textured knit structure can make the pattern of the fabric more visible. A washed appearance offers another direction, where the finish becomes part of the garment's character.

Regentech's Sanrenity sandwashed knit collection provides a finishing-led route to explore alongside more visibly textured constructions. The relevant question is how much surface detail the garment needs: a subtle effect that rewards a closer look, or a texture that reads across the whole silhouette.

For a simple top, keep the neckline and seams quiet enough for the chosen surface to remain legible. For a coordinated set, consider how the effect reads across a larger area. The approved sample should also establish which irregularities are intentional, with the appearance reviewed after the intended care cycle.

Bringing the Directions into a Collection

These directions can give separate garments distinct roles within the same collection. A defined top may sit alongside a fluid jersey layer and a textured pullover, with each fabric contributing a different silhouette or surface.

Direction Garment to Explore Main Development Question
Defined silhouette Boxy top, shaped skirt or relaxed trouser Should the fabric hold an outline, fall in a clean line, or combine both?
Visible layer Slim mock-neck or relaxed long-sleeve top Which parts of the garment remain visible, and how should they fit and drape?
Surface character Slub tee, textured pullover or washed set How much of the garment's identity should come from its surface?

Bring a garment reference and an existing fabric, if available, into the first discussion. A request for more definition at the hem, less bulk beneath a jacket or a quieter surface effect gives a sample selection a clear purpose.
